About
Redwood Son, a fresh new Portland project with great promise was forging ahead with a steady string of high profile shows, when the group’s drummer, Kipp Crawford, tragically lost his life (still unsolved) last November 4th, 2009. The Band was set to hit the studio to record their long awaited debut album, when the project was cut painfully short. In his honor, Redwood Son (Josh Malm) will release a special EP from the previous Band's last live performance together, recorded September 11, 2009 at The Aladdin Theater. The 5 original song EP, basks in Crawford's radiant charisma and truly highlights his unique approach to the drum kit. "It was such an honor to have been able to share the stage with Kipp for as long as we did, and I think this was our best effort up to that point", say's Malm. "Nothing more and nothing less, but KIPP was prolific that night!"
Set to release on 5/5 at The Buffalo Gap Saloon, where Redwood Son plays each week, as part of a “Wednesday Confessional” residency, Malm's intends on paying his respects, week in and week out, in the legendary acoustic room. A perfect venue for the group’s singer and songwriter, to start over with an eventual goal of re-building what is currently a "solo" effort. Malm sings from his heart and soul and gathers an eclectic group of followers who have supported him over the years, since getting his start under the moniker "j*malem". The project is currently in the studio working on a full length album, but has yet to determine a projected release. "I think Folks will experience some authentic and magical moments in this EP, with an appreciation for the sentiment. This is the first stop in putting this thing back together again" says Malm.
Although the path may be slow and gradual, this dynamic venue lends itself to a variety of possibilities, considering its size and space. "Who knows if I will be solo acoustic, or rockin' 3 part harmonies from week to week. I'm just optimistic about the future again, and I owe that respect to Kipp for saving my Life, and inspiring me to keep pushing forward with my music". The club is located at 6835 Southwest Macadam Avenue. Portland, OR 97219-2313, 503-244-7111.
Redwood Son’s music stirs the souls of the listeners each week, upstairs in this cozy "speak-easy" style space, and Malm’s raspy yet pure tone, rhythmic guitar playing and engaging personality continue to entertain faithful listeners and new followers. His release of this Live EP is an effort of the heart. “I feel this is something that will always represent us -- it is what we have from our time together. There are so many people in this rich music community that have been affected by the loss of Kipp, and Redwood Son is just another one of the many. I’ve come out of the darkness to do this -- as a tribute to Kipp.” said Malm. “I’m almost forcing myself to stand up and say that enough is enough, we are all human, we all make mistakes, and nothing is worth throwing your Life and Dreams into the toilet over. Its good to be on this little stage in this intimate room, to build a night based around truth, and honesty. I have been extremely humbled by this loss, and all of it has all been a very sobering experience. Kipp really was my right hand man -- my musical soul mate. It’s hard now to not have him.” He said. “That gift is still living -- through his voice in my head, and I trusted him more than anyone. That was the magic. He was the reason I continued to believe in it. His focus with Redwood Son was the engine that drove the project and his spirit will live on through this music.”
Redwood Son did survive this tragedy, though part of its heart was lost when Crawford passed. Malm was not sure he "wanted" to move forward, but through his innate passion for his music and dedication to the memory of his friend -- he continues. "I was on the verge of just getting a day job and raising my Son, but I kept hearing Kipp in my head saying, "Get over ME, and quit being a (expletive)!!" Malm’s intentions are true when he says, “In this message, I’m ready to say -- I’m ready to talk about it -- I’m ready to move on -- to put this out -- to show some respect -- my ode to him -- for what he shared with me as a musician and a person.”
